UFC Fight Night 94 results: Albert Morales and Alejandro Perez battle to bizarre majority draw

HIDALGO, Texas – One point deducted for hitting after the horn, one illegal knee that resulted in no penalty whatsoever, and somehow Albert Morales and Alejandro Perez still couldn’t determine a winner to the satisfaction of the judges at cageside.

After three spirited and sometimes strange rounds, Morales (6-0-1 MMA, 0-0-1 UFC) and Perez (17-6-1 MMA, 3-1-1 UFC) fought to a majority draw with scores of 29-27, 28-28, and 28-28.

The flyweight bout opened up the preliminary card of today’s UFC Fight Night 94 event at State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas. It streamed on UFC Fight Pass ahead of the rest of the card on FS1.

Morales was the aggressor early in the fight, forcing Perez back and letting loose with quick punch flurries once his back hit the fence, but where things really began to get contentious was at the end of the first frame. Both men exchanged punches after the horn sounded to end the first, though it seemed to be Perez who was more assertive about continuing the action.

That earned Perez a warning from referee Kerry Hatley, but it was a warning he did not heed. As the second round came to a close Perez again fired off a punch after the horn – this time an arguably more innocuous effort – and the fighters returned to their corners. But as they both came out to start the third, Hatley intervened to deduct a point from Perez.

It was a surprising turn of events, but even more surprising was the fact that, moments later, Morales sprinted toward a downed Perez and landed an obviously illegal knee to the head of the downed fighter. That foul went wholly unremarked upon by Hatley, who opted neither to take a point nor to warn Morales for the infraction.

The fight ended with a visibly exhausted Morales just trying to make it to the final horn, as Perez pressed forward with more abandon in the waning moments. Still, when the judges’ scorecards were read only one had Morales winning, with the other two deciding the matter as a majority draw.

For Morales, it’s the first time in his professional career he’s failed to come away with a victory. For Perez, it snaps a two-fight winning streak in the UFC.
